The chalets are situated at between 1000 and 2000 meters. For example, La Monse is at a lower altitude, Les Grenérets at a middle- level, and the Porcheresse grazing area at an elevated altitude. At most of these grazing areas, the land holder is also a cheese maker. Gruyères is produced over a wood-burning fire according to ancestral traditions.
